==Early life==
Gardiner was born in Sydney, New South Wales and spent his early years living in Harrow Road, Bexley. His father, Edward John Gardiner, a long-serving Mayor of Rockdale, and mother Mary Estelle (née Beard) then built a new house c.1912–1916 at 18 Oakura Street.〔(【引用サイトリンク】 publisher =Office of Heritage & Environment )〕 During this period, Gardiner attended Newington College.〔''Newington College Register of Past Students 1863-1998'' (Sydney, 1999)〕 He was articled to Peddle, Thorp and Walker and graduated in architecture from Sydney Technical College.〔Freeland, J.M.
